Bedroom Design Checklist for Indian Homes
Your bedroom should be your sanctuary — a space that promotes rest, relaxation, and romance. Here's a comprehensive guide to getting every element right.
Space Planning
Start with the bed — it's the anchor of the room. Leave at least 3 feet on both sides for easy access. In smaller bedrooms, a platform bed with storage drawers underneath maximises every inch.
Minimum room sizes: - Single: 10×10 feet - Double/Queen: 12×12 feet - Master with walk-in: 14×16 feet
Wardrobe Design
The wardrobe typically consumes 20–35% of the bedroom budget. Key decisions:
Type: - Sliding door: Saves floor space, modern aesthetic. Cannot access full interior simultaneously. - Hinged door: Full access, traditional look. Requires 2 feet swing clearance. - Walk-in: The dream choice. Requires a minimum 6×4 feet dedicated space.
Interior layout: For a 6-foot wardrobe, divide into: 50% hanging (shirts one side, trousers the other), 30% shelves (sweaters, accessories), 20% drawers (innerwear, socks).
Materials: BWP plywood for the carcass, laminate or acrylic for shutters. For premium look, go for PU finish or glass panels.
Lighting
Bedrooms need three types of lighting: 1. Ambient: Ceiling light or cove lighting for general illumination 2. Task: Bedside reading lights (wall-mounted or pendant) 3. Accent: Wardrobe interior lights, vanity mirror lighting
Use warm white (2700K–3000K) bulbs throughout the bedroom. Avoid cool white — it disrupts sleep patterns.
Colour Palette
Research consistently shows that certain colours promote better sleep: - Soft blues and greens: Calm and restful - Warm whites and creams: Timeless and relaxing - Dusty pinks and mauves: Romantic and warm - Sage greens: Natural and grounding
Avoid stimulating colours like bright red, orange, or yellow as accent walls in bedrooms.
Flooring
Engineered wood: Best option. Looks like hardwood, more stable. Cost: ₹120–₹250/sqft installed.
Vitrified tiles: Most common in Indian bedrooms. Easy to maintain, cool underfoot. Choose matte finish for warmth.
Carpet: Adds warmth and acoustic insulation. Not ideal for allergy sufferers. Difficult to maintain in humid climates.
Storage Solutions
Beyond the wardrobe, consider: - Under-bed drawers or hydraulic storage - Floating shelves for books and décor - Built-in bedside tables with drawers - Overhead storage above wardrobe
